Job Summary
Provides overall leadership, direction, optimization and consistency for safety, production scheduling, shipping procedures, ship-on-time expectations, warehousing procedures, and associated costs for the Production Scheduling, Shipping and Warehousing segments of the business. Works to ensure shipping and the other operational areas of the mill are working and active in pursuing opportunities to improve cost, quality, safety, and monthly shipping volumes.
Direct Reports / Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has direct supervisory responsibilities for Shipping Technicians / Forklift Operators.
Position Responsibilities
Production Scheduling
- Responsible for scheduling production lines in the most efficient manner while considering customer’s needs, in-house requirements, manning and maintenance.
- Provides support and communication to Customer Service and Sales when issues arise; rush requests, minimums, late orders, planned shutdowns, specialty runs, etc.
- Works with maintenance to schedule maintenance days and utilize downtime on production lines.
- Works closely with Production and Quality Coordinators to ensure that “New Product Requests” are scheduled and completed in a timely manner.
- Provide a weekly Production Schedule/Update to mill.
- Works closely with Quality Technicians with the disposition of any quality controlled or downgraded product.
- Participate in inventory counts prior to month end.
- Understand packaging requirements to ensure production lines are supplied.
Shipping Supervisor
- Monitor and optimize the shipping process to meet customer and ship-on-time targets
- Prepares and communicates shipping reports to all stakeholders
- Provides oversight and leadership for Technicians and the equipment they operate for Takeaway, warehousing, dispatching, marshalling, shipping, related operator rounds and housekeeping of all areas
- Corresponds with trucking firms to ensure expectations are understood and met; ensures contracts and pricing is current
- Ensures all unit loads are done so with optimum care to avoid damaged units being sent the customer
- Responsible for staff development within ownerships
- Keep all workers compliant and updated on Safety area training, JHA’s, annual orientations, lockout certification
- Attend daily operational meetings and lead functional areas meetings as required
- Oversee warehouse to ensure cleanliness and orderliness of product adheres to warehouse layout
- Oversight for truck drivers to ensure safety compliance while loading and tarping on site
- Works closing with Customer Service on customer order requirements
- Maintain plant inventory levels as directed
Budget Responsibilities
- Manages shipping department budget
- Ensures work completed and supplies used is within budgetary constraints
- Complete budgets of specialized projects related to specific work
- Participates in Annual Plan/Budget preparation
Safety and Housekeeping Responsibilities
- Is a model for safety behavior and coaches others to be the same; Leads Safe Teams for Shipping area
- Participates in all mill safety programs
- Maintains a high level of safety awareness in the mill
- Participates in mill safety audits
- Maintains LOTO certification in all areas where work is required
- Participate in the development of warehousing and shipping safety procedures
- Ensures areas of responsibility have exemplary housekeeping
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline preferred
- Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory/leadership experience preferred
- Minimum of five years’ of experience in shipping (logistics) and warehousing processes, preferably in engineered wood products
- Understands the modes of transportation and routes in North America
- Certified to operate a forklift, certified to handle propane or willingness to certify
- Must possess experience working in a fast-paced environment and demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships by engaging with others at all levels of the organization to embrace diversity of thought and inclusiveness of all team members.
- Must demonstrate an openness and ability to giving and receiving feedback for the purpose of individual growth and development and building effective teams
- Must place safety as the first priority and demonstrate safe working behaviors at all times
- Must possess a strong attention to details and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
- SAP experience
